My wife and I left Athens in 1995 for Metro Atlanta where we both had jobs. However, as we left, we both vowed that we’d return to Athens someday. During the eleven years we were away from Athens and Beech Haven, we continued to receive and read The Beams, Beech Haven’s newsletter. We were able to keep up with all kinds of news about folks we had come to know and care about during our time here, and we saw that God continued to work in a mighty way through His Church here. Most interesting to me was the formation and work of Christian Sportsmen’s Ministry. As God provided opportunities for our return to the Athens area in 2006, He gave us a no-brainer when it came to finding a church home. The opportunity to serve him again through BHBC and now through CSM made clear our direction. I’m not a preacher or a musician, and I may not be much of a teacher, but this ministry provides a place for me, a regular outdoorsman, to serve God while appreciating His Creation and leading others to do the same.
Sunrise in a treestand. As I watch the sun rise through the branches of the trees around my treestand, I cannot help but reflect on the words of the one who penned the words to “How Great Thou Art,” and I offer it as my morning prayer, for there is no place I feel closer to God than when I am alone in his beautiful creation:
Oh, Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:
Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee:
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee:
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
